With a blade made from an old file, this bone handled knife is overkill for whittling fine details. Yet is undoubtedly something a hunter/trapper from the late 1700s would carry.
What I like about this photograph is that nearly everything is rendered in earthtones. The leather pants, linen shirt, knife sheaf and the wooden bench are all from the earth tone family. Even the man's hands march the color scheme.
The principle subject, the imposing knife blade, captures the eye, because it is the only element that is different from the rest.
