This is good news on the feature list, but bad news on the price. I am waffling around on which flash to buy. I realize this top end flash is a killer unit, but seriously, who can afford this, unless they’re a pro.

For that much money, I could buy a whole bunch of aftermarket wireless gizmos, tripods, and thyristor flashes, and have a great suite of lighting gear. All for the price of ONE flash lamp from Sony, albeit with a bazillion bells and whistles.

Doesn’t anyone else think it’s time to call bullshit, when a flash costs over $500 when you add in taxes?

And the “under $200″ unit is no longer even listed on sonystyle.ca. (HVL-F36AM silently disappeared from sony’s own online canadian web store, just in the last few days.)

Anyone who wants to do a lot of flash work with their sony alpha should check out the hong-kong guys, such as http://www.gadgetinfinity.com, if you want to get off camera wireless flash without killing your bank account.

The F56AM -USED- to be priced at around 309 most places. Then sony started some stupid program called SURE, which forced retailers to sell their product for SONY’s MSRP so the sellers could keep their profits up or something like that… so we all suffer. Luckily i got mine when the getting was good.
