Probably my favorite photo from the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens doesn't involve a flower, rather it is this freeze-frame image of a jet of water at the fountain outside the administration building. I used a very fast shutter speed of 1/2500sec to freeze the liquid as it burbled up from the fountain.
The lens was the Minolta 70-210 beercan, shot wide open at f/4. The wide opening served the dual purpose of allowing me to shoot at a very fast shutter speed, while at the same time creating narrow depth of field that throws everything but the water into soft focus.
I really like the way the fast shutter caught the pattern of water drops falling from the main water spurt.
Because the water continually forms into a different shape, it is difficult to predict what you will capture when you trip the shutter. To be sure I got the kind of photo I wanted, I shot a number of images of this same scene. This jellyfish shaped torrent is the photo I liked best.
Better photos with the Sony A300 or A350
